La Familia maintains a contract with the Regional Center of the East Bay for Persons with developmental disabilities. Some 460 Spanish-speaking families and their disabled family members receive Case Management services from qualified bilingual personnel. Disabled persons are served by accessing specialized services that assure developmental growth. In addition, staff is responsible for monitoring individual plans that assure the quality of our services. To enhance services La Familia is dedicated to training and supporting parent groups. La Familia is the only Latino Community Based Organization under contract by Regional Centers in California providing such services. La Familia is a leading community organization advocating for Latinos with disabilities, locally, state and nationwide. La Familia has been supportive in establishing California Fiesta Educativa, as well as the National Fiesta Educativa. This is one of the very few national Latino entities currently advocating for over 5 million US Latinos with disabilities. |
Locally, La Familia, in conjunction with local groups, helped implement CONGRESO FAMILIAR. This is a unique annual conference for more than 700 Latino families of children and adults with disabilities. This event provides information and training opportunities in Spanish to family members who need to learn and utilize services and become informed about their legal service rights. La Familia, influences and fosters the development of parent support groups for families of persons with disabilities. These groups meet monthly in different northern California communities to support each other, increase knowledge and to advocate for services. Non-English speaking parents are more likely to form these groups since language barriers are a critical factor in accessing services. |
